Prenatal and Parent Education

The Need

Many low-income parents lack the knowledge to manage their children's behavior and provide nurturing support to their infants, toddlers, and children. Teen mothers, especially, are still struggling through their own adolescence and can have difficulty properly caring for and encouraging the healthy development of their young children. However, with the right support, all parents can rise to the challenge of parenting and embrace their role as caregiver.

Our Programs

Christopher House offers a variety of services designed to educate and support teenage and adult mothers and fathers throughout pregnancy, as well as their child's infancy and early childhood. Our prenatal and parent education staff, including parent educators, doulas, and social service workers:
    •    Prepare mothers for birth and the first months of their baby's life.
    •    Build parent/child relationships and assist with infant care.
    •    Create a strong support system for new parents.
    •    Educate parents about their role as their child's "first teacher."

Our prenatal and parent education programs include:
    •    Weekly home visits from doulas and parent educators.
    •    Weekly prenatal and parenting support groups facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker, with curriculum focused on building the parent-child relationship and preventing child abuse.
    •    Parent education workshops.

Teen and Adult Parenting and Prenatal Services (TAPPS) is currently accepting new mothers for supportive services and education. Mothers must be age 13 or older and either pregnant or parenting a child. In addition, participants must live in the our catchment area: Division to Devon and Lake Michigan to Narragansett.
