Early Childhood Education

Christopher House’s nationally renowned, full-day early childhood schools educate children from six weeks to five years old. Our schools advance literacy, motor skills, positive social behavior, cognitive development, math skills, and long-term success.

Recent Results and Accolades

  • Over past two years, 90% of 5 year olds in our program have achieved kindergarten-ready levels in their development, as evidenced by outstanding scores on the Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment.
  • In 2010, our Logan Square center was chosen as an international tour site because of its innovative and effective use of the arts-integrative Reggio Emilia curriculum.
  • For the last three years, Christopher House has scored a 100% from National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) in the areas of assessment, teaching, and parent/family relations.
  • Our Logan Square and Uptown centers are the only childcare facilities in Chicago, and two of only seven facilities in the entire state of Illinois, to earn prestigious four-star ratings on the Illinois Quality Rating Scale (QRS).
  • After a competitive application process, Christopher House was awarded a $5 million grant for the construction of our Belmont Cragin center from the Illinois Capital Development Board – one of only three multi-million dollar grants awarded for the construction of early childhood education facilities.

Christopher House Elementary School is an innovative new school model offering a continuum of education for children as young as six weeks of age through eighth grade. Christopher House Elementary School’s mission is to develop independent, creative, lifelong learners in a school where students, teachers, and parents form a community committed to excellence, perseverance, personal responsibility, and compassion. Christopher House provides an engaging environment designed to drive students’ social, emotional, and cognitive development. Our School Age program takes place after school, all day (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) during the summer, and on weekdays when school is not in session.

  • Cooking, music, dance, writing, art, sports, architecture, and other ‘clubs’ build skills and knowledge while exploring students’ interests.
  • Tutoring and homework help to keep students on-track in school while promoting academic achievement and a desire to excel.
  • Adult guidance helps students reach their academic and non-academic goals each year.
  • Nutritious snacks and opportunities for physical activity to advance children’s physical development and promote a healthy lifestyle.

RECENT RESULTS

  • 82% of students achieved at least two of their three academic and future-planning annual goals.
  • 90% of students seen in counseling showed improvement in their social and emotional development.
  • 98% of students promoted to the next grade on time.

Adult Education

Christopher House fosters the literacy and English competency parents need to be self-sufficient:

  • One-on-one and small-group tutoring.
  • Skills development training to help parents secure and maintain employment.

Teen Parent Program

Our prenatal and parent education staff creates a strong support system for new parents through weekly home visits, support groups, and education workshops. Our parent educators, doulas (pregnancy and birth experts), and licensed clinical social workers teach parents to:

  • Prepare for the birth and the first months of their baby’s life.
  • Build parent-child relationships and assist with infant care.
  • Create a strong support system for new parents.
  • Educate parents about their role as their child’s “first teacher.”

Social Work

Christopher House provides free counseling for the low-income children, parents, and families who are enrolled in our continuum of schools. Licensed clinical social workers partner closely with clients of all ages, providing individually tailored and culturally responsive care. Through our services, parents are able to address their mental health concerns and build a stable home environment that encourages their child’s healthy development. Our high-quality Social Work services include:

  • Individual and family counseling.
  • Crisis counseling.
  • Parent, child, and youth support groups.
  • Parent workshops.
  • Parent and staff consultations to help manage difficult situations in the classroom or at home.

Food Pantry, Holiday, and Emergency Support

Christopher House food pantry and holiday programs meet the hunger and nutrition needs of our families while educating them on food budgeting and healthy lifestyle choices. We operate three food pantries at our sites on the North and West Sides of Chicago. Holiday assistance is provided through our Holiday Program – a Food Drive in November, and Family to Family in December.

When available, Christopher House also offers donated clothing and housewares for families. In addition, emergency financial assistance is available for families who are struggling to pay rent, heating, electric, and other essentials.

Enrollment

Teen Parent Program is currently accepting new mothers for support services and education. Mothers must be age 13 or older and either pregnant or parenting a child. In addition, participants must live in the our catchment area: Division to Devon and Lake Michigan to Narragansett.
